Obituary

Memorial services for John McNamara, 61, of Highland Village, Texas, will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Hudson & Torres Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport. Visitation begins at 5 p.m., one hour before the service.

John Francis McNamara II was born in Aurora, Colorado, on November 10, 1964, to James E. and Janice McNamara. After a long battle with cancer, he died on January 13, 2026, in Highland Village, Texas. He was 61 years old.

John was in the 8th grade when he moved from Azle, Texas, to the Bridgeport area with his mom, stepfather, two sisters, stepbrother and stepsister. As a young man he played baseball and football, but despite being vertically challenged, basketball was where he excelled. He loved watching all sports, but long after his playing days were over his all-time favorite thing to do was to go fishing.

He married Tonya Smith on July 17, 1999. at Pleasantview Baptist Church and became a Father to her three children. They added John Logan to their family in 2000. The family settled in Chico and had a good life together for 13 years. After their divorce, they remained close friends until the time of his death.

John was a hard worker his whole life. He started his career spreading fertilizer for Scotts Farm Supply in Bridgeport. He also worked at Austin Powder Company and Schwans. His job as a truck driver for JC3 Energy Services and then as a dispatcher gave him a lot of satisfaction and purpose, especially later in life. He took pride in the trucks he drove, but even more so the close relationships he built through working. After his cancer diagnosis, despite undergoing multiple rounds of chemo, he continued to work for three years until he finally had to retire in August 2025.

He always loved spending time camping and kayaking, playing golf and just being outside in nature. The love of fishing was something he shared with his two boys, Morgan and Logan. As a self-professed “foodie”, John and Logan spent many weekends scouring the DFW metroplex for the “best burger in Texas”. He shared the love of watching Jeopardy and playing trivia with his dad. He was an avid reader (mostly Stephen King novels) and had very strong opinions about music, which he shared with his brother-in-law Kenneth. If you didn’t like Pink Floyd you were just wrong. For many years he owned a motorcycle and loved taking it out on long rides in the fall.

John is preceded in death by his sister, Sheila McNamara of Wichita, Kansas; stepmother, Sara McNamara of Athens, Georgia; stepfather, Wally Musser of Decatur, Texas; nephews, Jason Musser, Travis Tankersley, Anthony Tankersly; and loving Grandparents on both sides.

He is survived by his parents, Jim McNamara and Janice Musser; sons, Logan and wife Ashley, Morgan and wife Tammy; grandson, Stetson McNamara; sister, Shannon Koonsman and husband Kenneth; stepbrother, Garlan Musser and wife Tammy; stepsister, Kelly Cody; stepbrother, Chris McDaniel; stepsister, Shelley Sawhook; ex-wife, Tonya Smith; nephews, Chris Wilson, Steven Wilson, Heath Wilson, Josh Tankersley; and many other nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind life-long friends who never failed to keep his spirits lifted throughout his long illness.
