Funeral Services for Bennie Rutherford, 96, of Decatur, Texas, will be held on November 18, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Decatur, beginning at 11:00 AM, followed by interment at 12:00 PM.
Bennie Rutherford, a beloved member of the community of Decatur, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on February 23, 1929, in Greenwood, Texas, Bennie lived a life rich in achievement, and love.
He was a proud graduate of Greenwood High School and the University of North Texas, where his athletic talents were recognized through his induction into both the Slidell High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the University of North Texas Athletic Hall of Fame. These honors reflected not only his prowess in sports but also his dedication to his education and personal growth.
Upon completion of his masters degree at North Texas in 1954, he went onto coach basketball for seven years and was the superintendent of the Everman ISD from 1964 to 1983.
Bennie's fondness for life extended to his many hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing Forty-Two, and cherished his time spent fishing. A true Texas gentleman, he had a particular fondness for pecans, which he enjoyed in various dishes and delights.
He found joy and purpose as a member of the First Baptist Church in Decatur, underscoring his deep commitment to his faith and community. Bennie's engaging spirit and warm demeanor left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Bennie is survived by his daughter, Denise Joseph; grandchildren Shayne Hardin, Ben Joseph, Rodney Joseph, Sandy Joseph, Trent Joseph, Cole Rutherford, and Christina Wyatt; as well as great-grandchildren Gray Hardin, Sloane Hardin, Zada Joseph, Sarah Joseph, Blaine Rutherford, Addison Wyatt, and Tristen Wyatt. Bennie's pride and joy was his beloved dachshund, Hank, a constant companion who brought him much happiness.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marijon Rutherford, to whom he was married for 71 years, 9 months, and 1 day; his son, Steve Rutherford; his parents, Harley and Ethyl Rutherford; his sisters, Velita Rutherford and Mary Stephens; and his brother, Hardy Rutherford.
Bennie Rutherford's legacy is one of love, dedication, and passion for life, leaving behind a profound impact on family and friends alike. His memory will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
